Charles Ray has been writing fiction since winning a national short story writing contest when he was 13. He is the author of the Al Pennyback and Ed Lazenby mystery series, the Buffalo Soldier historical/western series, and Frontier Justice: Bass Reeves, Deputy US Marshal, a popular fictionalized account of the first African-American deputy marshal west of the Mississippi River.

Ray also writes nonfiction, covering a variety of subjects from leadership to diplomacy and international affairs. He is an avid photographer and accomplished artist who was once editorial cartoonist for a North Carolina weekly newspaper, and his cartoons and artwork appeared regularly in regional and national publications in the 70s and 80s.
