Firing of BLS chief has long-term consequences.

In addition to statistics on employment, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, whose head Trump fired because he didn’t like the report BLS issued on employment and unemployment, is also responsible for reporting on prices, inflation, productivity, spending, pay, and workplace injuries. If he politicizes BLS, which was established in 1884 by Congress as an independent body under the supervision of the Department of Labor, companies and consumers will no longer be able to rely on its output which helps in planning economic activity and, as happened when President Maduro politicized everything in his effort to stay in power, actions like this can tank a nation’s economy. Combined with Trump’s whim and spite policymaking and his on-again, off-again tariff policy, the U.S. economy is being put in grave danger.
