Charles Ray Lands With New “Caleb Johnson” Western Bestseller!

August 5, 2025|Authors, DSP Articles (Charles Ray Lands With New “Caleb Johnson” Western Bestseller!)

The mountains have a way of testing a man, and Charles Ray knows exactly how to bring that test to life. With Caleb Johnson: Mountain Man: Sign of the Raven, one of the most respected voices in the Western genre returns with another hard-hitting tale from his long-running Mountain Man series. Ray’s signature blend of authentic frontier grit, colorful characters, and fast-moving adventure is back in full force—and fans will not be disappointed.

Sign of the Raven delivers everything readers have come to expect from the series: tense chases through untamed country, unpredictable twists, and the kind of sharp, character-driven storytelling that keeps the pages turning. Whether you’ve been riding with Caleb from the start or this is your first time on the trail, this adventure grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go.

From the first page, the stakes are high. The bank in Bear Creek has been robbed, and Town Marshal Ned Walker knows there’s only one man for the job: Caleb Johnson. Along with his equally capable wife, Flora, Caleb sets out to bring the thief to justice. But this is no straightforward manhunt.

What’s the Story?

The trail to justice is complicated by the unexpected arrival of Jackson Penny, an old army scout with a big reputation—and an even bigger ego. Penny just happened to be in town when the robbery went down, and he’s decided to track the outlaw himself. His motive? Catching the thief before Caleb does and claiming a prize far greater than any posted reward.

What follows is a tense and dangerous race across rugged country, where every decision can mean the difference between catching the robber or losing him forever. Caleb and Flora must use every skill they have to navigate the terrain, track their quarry, and avoid clashing with Penny, whose determination could either aid their mission or derail it completely. In the end, it’s not just about bringing the thief back—it’s about honor, pride, and who will earn the respect of the frontier.

Why Readers Love This Series

Charles Ray has earned a loyal following for a reason. His Mountain Man adventures aren’t just action-packed—they’re grounded in the reality of frontier life, with characters who feel lived-in and real. Caleb Johnson isn’t the kind of hero who relies on swagger alone. He’s thoughtful, capable, and as tough as the terrain he travels. Add in Flora, a partner who can hold her own in any situation, and you’ve got a dynamic duo that stands out in Western fiction.

Where to Get It

Caleb Johnson: Mountain Man: Sign of the Raven will be available soon on Amazon in Kindle and paperback formats. Saddle up and ride into Charles Ray’s latest Western triumph—you won’t want to miss how this hunt plays out.

Teaching history through fiction – and proving that history can be fun

I’ve been writing since I was twelve or thirteen, but my fascination with and love of history date back to well before that, beginning in fourth or fifth grade when I devoured every history book in our meager school library. When I graduated from high school and joined the army, being posted in places with excellent libraries that gave me access to history books that I hadn’t know existed, only fueled my love and activated my desire to learn more—especially the role that women and minorities played in history, facts that were often omitted from the history books I had access to in pre-Civil Rights Texas.

It was only natural, I suppose, that my love of history would impact my writing. Whatever I write, I strive to make it as historically accurate as possible, and I also enjoy writing stories about characters, people, and events that have been either overlooked or omitted from the history books accessible to American students.

Even though I’ve written in multiple genres for the past ten years, I’ve primarily written westerns, which have given me many opportunities to tell the true story of the Wild West. But it’s not just the historical inaccuracy of popular media’s portrayal of the American West that bothers me. World history writ large has often been whitewashed, sanitized, and rewritten to eliminate entire people from the record. My current publisher, DSP, has been at the forefront of putting historically accurate, while still entertaining, western fiction on the market for readers around the world. But it has gone a step further. It has provided writers like me with a platform to explore a broad range of subjects, ranging from military novels to historical fiction.

I’ve written several titles that’ve given me the chance to delve deeply into U.S. and world history and come up with some interesting —and I hope entertaining —characters and events that I’ve been proud to share with a global audience.

One of my first forays into historical fiction that was off the beaten path was The Ethiopian, a story of a soldier in Hannibal of Carthage’s army during the Punic Wars, who is captured by the Romans and sold as a gladiator. Although entirely fictional, it was based on historical events, and in researching the topic, I discovered that the interactions between ancient Roman and Greek civilizations and those of Africa were far older than I’d previously been taught.

I’ve always been drawn to American history, and the more I study, the more I discover that the history taught in American classrooms is often a mix of fact and fiction. For instance, the way President Chester A. Arthur is frequently overlooked in studies about American presidents led me to write Chester A. Arthur: Changing Course, which describes some of the truly remarkable things he accomplished as head of state and how he broke away from the traditional political mold of his time.

Few people over forty are not familiar with Lew Wallace’s Ben-Hur, but probably only a handful who know that Wallace was a Union general in the Civil War who fought a losing battle that prevented the Confederates from taking the nation’s capital at a crucial point in the war—my effort to correct that lack of knowledge was The Lost Battle That Saves Washington: Monocacy Junction.

My most recent adventure in the realm of writing and righting the historical record is The Nubian Queen, a story about a queen of the Kush Empire (in what is now northern Sudan, Africa) who, after the Romans had conquered Egypt and then set their sights on the gold mines of Nubia to the south, thwarted the Roman invasion.

I hope that readers of this article will take a look at these offerings, which demonstrate that history is not only necessary for a better understanding of who we are and where we come from, but it can also be enjoyable.

New books that I think you’ll like

I’ve been extremely busy of late with westerns. In addition to my several series, the western soap opera series that DSP publicist Nick Wale suggested, finally launched after a rough ride. You can get the first six episodes of Life of a Texan: A Family Story on Amazon. For now, it’s only an e-book, but hopefully reader interest will justify issuing it in paperback. We’ll keep our fingers crossed and Mike Mackessy and I will keep cranking them out.

I’ve been trying a few new things as well. For starters, a tale of knights in the Middle Ages.  A Clash of Colors: A Medieval Knights Adventure is also available as an e-book at https://www.amazon.com/Clash-Colors-Medieval-Knights-Adventure-ebook/dp/B0DF86L21K/ .

I’ve also done four Vietnam War novels which you can check out in the Other Fiction Page of this site.  One of my favorite non-western projects, though is my dystopian political thriller. I’ve done two so far which are available as e-books and paperbacks. The third and final of this trilogy, Resistance, Retribution, and Redemption, should be finished by the end of the year. The first one, The Last Election is at https://www.amazon.com/Last-Election-Charles-Ray-ebook/dp/B0D8DMNPXY/

And, number two, The Web of Deceit, can be seen at: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CW1HB63S/
